The arcade fighting game REAL BOUT FATAL FURY SPECIAL was developed and published by SNK in 1997. The combat strategies of this system have been enhanced with the introduction of a new two-line battle system, the improvement of the Power Gauge system, and the removal of the ring-out system. There are a total of 19 fighters besides Wolfgang Krauser in this contest.

Fatal Fury Special reintroduces playable versions of Tung Fu Rue, Cheng Sinzan, Laurence Blood, and Wolfgang Krauser, while the roster from the original Real Bout remains unchanged. Geese Howard returns in this installment, despite being canonically killed off in his own KOF tournament in the previous game. He appears as a hidden final boss in a special "Nightmare Match" and as an unlockable playable character in the home versions. This is due to his ending from the original Real Bout occurring after he has won the tournament. To bring the total number of playable characters to 23, additional versions of Andy Bogard, Billy Kane, Blue Mary, and Tung Fu Rue are hidden at various points throughout the game.
